Symptoms of Allergies

Your pet may start to exhibit some signs of skin allergies as early as one year of age.  Typically, skin allergies will appear as an irritation on the body.  This can mean your pet is scratching, biting, or licking a certain area which may eventually result in hair loss.  Your pet may even begin to rub his or her face or nose repeatedly.  Allergies can also take the form of a rash or hot spot on the body.  Typically, the impacted area will appear red and can even become scaly or bloody from excessive scratching.  Other allergies can be rooted in the respiratory system.  You may notice your pet breathing heavier or even snoring if his or her throat is swollen from irritation.  Like people, animals can also exhibit symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and sneezing.

Common Allergens

It can be frustrating trying to determine what your pet is allergic to and often a simple trial and error are necessary to identify the problem.  One of the more common allergies in pets is a food allergy.  Try changing the brand or type of food used to see if you can reduce some of the symptoms.  Other allergies common in pets include environmental allergens.  This could be something seasonal outside, or even dust or dander found in the home.  Further different cleaning supplies or perfume have been known to cause allergies in pets.

Read What Our Clients Say

  • "The staff is wonderful. We brought Otis, a very large 4 yr old Rottie there for an ACL/miniscus surgery. Everything was successful. We just brought him for his final follow up and all is good. This big guy has no manners and no sense of personal space except for his own space, but he loves the receptionists and vet techs there, and they love him. Nothing but good things to say about Watertown Veterinary Hospital."
